Shorebird Field Technician – New Jersey

Monitoring and management of at-risk beach nesting birds, including piping plover, American Oystercatcher, least tern, and black skimmer at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, New Jersey from ~ April 1 – August 2021. Tracking nesting birds from territorial establishment to nesting to fledgling of chicks. Resighting of banded birds. Placement of predator exclosures (cages) on piping plover nests. Working as part of a team of 5 technicians, including crew leader. Access to nesting sites is generally via boat. Monitoring 5 days a week, work conditions can include extreme weather, extensive walking in soft sand, and carting of heavy equipment. Free housing is available, subject to Covid restrictions/policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate degree in wildlife ecology, biology, or conservation science or related work experience is preferred. Previous experience working with beach nesting birds (or similar species) is preferred. Having completed federal Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) and having boating experience will factor strongly in choice. Ability to use a scope to resight banded birds is a plus. Must possess smart phone (to use in field to collect data). Must possess driver’s license and have reliable transportation to report to work site or boat launch on a daily basis, ride sharing only possible subject to Covid restrictions/policies. Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
